"…Americans daydream about the apocalypse all the time. We watch endless movies about it and burn through countless books. If it's not a virus, then it's an asteroid. It's volcanoes. It's zombies. It's something as ludicrous as James Patterson's Zoo, which imagines every animal from lions to house cats turning on humans. The worst part about novels like Zoo is how much we enjoy them. We talk about their "plausibility," and yet we never take any concrete steps to prevent our own destruction.
