You were asked – TMP link What two armies or factions make the most iconic match-up in Warhammer Fantasy Battle (pre-AoS)? Iconic, not as in "most competitive" to play, but fluff wise. Which two armies are most representative of what WHFB should be about when they meet? 25% said "Orcs/Goblins vs Dwarves" 21% said "I don't play WHFB" 19% said "Empire vs Orcs" |

5th edition box (when I started to play) had Lizardmen and Bretonians. Lizardmen got me hooked! |

>Lizardmen and Bretonians I remember that one. Strange choice. Probably one of the least iconic engagements of the background, but certainly two fine beautiful armies. |

Presumably the reason for the Lizardmen and Bretonnians was that GW had not done anything for those during the 4th edition (other than the Bretonnian army list in the starter box), so presumably sticking them to the 5th edition boxed set would get a lot of people excited about the new figures and army books that were to be soon released for these two armies. I think they also managed to insert somewhere a few mentions of small Bretonnian expeditions to Lustria and Southlands, in an effort to justify these two forces meeting in the gaming table. |

Actually the slann made causeways to send armies to other continents. The lizardmen cold invade brittonia, as was the case in that huge games day table shown in white dwarf. It was to promote the new game box and armies. Though they had all the lizardmen coming out of the sea. Very d day/Pertwee. I remember the lady casting spells, turning poor saurus into frogs. And skinks running among the grape Vines. I think every store in UK had a crack at a little piece. Then it was all put together. It was a great article. |

Here are some pics.
Guess that's a foreign print, but you get the point. That is a LOT of knights. |

Makes you wonder where it all ended up. Would be great to track it all down and put it together again. I'm sure the models, particularly dioramas, probably went back to the store to be put in the window. The table sections were probably dummped or given to stores or clubs. Even just more photos. More must exist, both the "professional" ones for the magazine and any taken by visitors. Imagine getting hundreds of the photos and making some computer guff so you can zoom in and look at it in 3d from all angles. Even print them out to make a card replica. Fun. Or just buy a bazillion models and painstakingly recreate it. Hmm… If 100+ people all did a bunch of models/board and then put it all together for display. Sweet. |

Another good one was the undead attacking an Empire Port City a few years later. link That one. |

According to a White Dwarf issue that I was reading recently (from 1998), the late 90's Games Day displays found their way to the Warhammer World museum that was at the time set up next to their Nottingham Lenton HQ. So at the time, no components were returned to the stores, given away or thrown away. Naturally, later on when the models and displays would have started to show their age, they may have got disassembled to make room for something newer instead. |

Actually, I did dig up the relevant White Dwarf copies (from 1997) in my collection, and according to them the event depicted in the giant diorama does not take place in the Bretonnia proper, but in the Crusader City of Antoch (presumably inspired by historical Antioch), which was described as an old Bretonnian colony located in the border area between Araby and Southlands (the later being inhabited by the lizardmen). |
