Castle Rising is an enormous earthwork castle in West Norfolk – not a motte and bailey but a huge ringwork enclosing a solid stone keep.

Dating from 1138/1140 the castle had 14th century improvements. In 1461 men were coming to Castle Rising to hire their jacks (padded armour) before marching to Towton with the Duke of Norfolk.

The odd shape of the two C or D shaped outworks (one at each end of the main ringwork) suggest that this might be a much earlier Iron Age earthwork or a Saxon burgh which the Normans later re-used. The Normans followed a similar policy reusing Roman forts (Pevensey and Portchester) or the Iron Age earthworks of Old Sarum in Wiltshire.

Largely ignored in the English Civil War, Castle Rising fell into decline and suffered much stone robbing but the big square 1140 AD keep remains today.

An excellent video tour. Many thanks.

@IronDuke596:
Thank you.
I am trying to pitch the outside broadcasts to non-UK viewers who are not familiar with the variations in castle design and building practice in Britain.

I am also trying to balance movies roughly 50/50 between wargames and modelling on one side and pure history (such as Castle Rising) on the other.

@dragon66:
Thank you.
I now have a better microphone and I am gaining in editing experience as I go.
