It's an excellent story of how wargaming, used correctly, can improve the performance / effectiveness of armed forces. It's also a fun game – I've played a professional reconstruction of the game as played in WW2.

WATU was closed down as soon as the war in Europe was over, presumably we knew everything we needed to know about hunting submarines, nothing would ever change and the RN is still using these tactics now. No, no the regular navy couldn't be that stupid could they!!

Wasn't the heroine in "The Cruel Sea" engaged in this, or am I misremembering that?

Been a few years, but that was one vivid book.
