No indication that this is so, but they have be playing around with this class for years, hull stretching and replacement, various configurations.some are fairly old. These are modest boats. The new batteries give them a little more endurance.

China still gets most of its oil from OPEC, a long and vulnerable supply line. No surprise they need some security in this region for it.

The first president to openly tell China we will help defend Taiwan says what he means, for better of for worse, when it comes to China. Lest we forget while making a big issue of the gaffe, it's also the truth.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP23 Nov 2023 1:58 p.m. PST

Not really true. they are getting better…finally. But so are ours, and our building programs through the 30s and 40s will be hard for them to match. As with other vessels, they have a way to go to reach parity. And we are not just sitting around and waiting for them to pass us.

These articles sometimes presuppose the US will do nothing and allow China to dominate us.

The US must remain its dominance with Carriers and Subs. If not … The US will not have the deterrence that we used to have. The CCP is in for the long game. The US leadership has other priorities … other than having a large capable military. The first priority of a republic is to protect its citizens.

China can and will do what it wants no matter what the US leadership says. They neither respect nor fear the US with its current leaders …

They are playing the USA, e.g. every time the USA brings up going Green. The CCP nods and then do what it wants … Little to nothing to do with Going Green …

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP02 Dec 2023 1:31 p.m. PST

But still the amount of government climate change spending for the next ten years is only a little over half of a single year of our military spending. Our economy is still running a bit hot but are vastly better off than any other nation on earth. The last quarter GDP was 5.2%. This drives the whole country.

Chinas GDP has recovered after a terrible first half. How did they get back to 4.9% ? A stimulus program this year!

China is always big on putting on a show. But they know they need us to survive and compete in the future. There is always a lot of posturing. In the meantime we need to stay a step ahead.

EVs are not selling, many Green initiatives in the US will go away when we have new capable leadership. Again, the EV is not a good choice at this time with the current tech level. I'm all for Going Green, but not until the tech is really viable. At this point it ain't IMO.

As far as the US Military. High Tech costs and we need to push the envelope on it. Especially with the shortfall of new recruits. That is not going to change anytime soon. As we see the world is still a dangerous place. And we are supporting 2 proxy wars and the GWoT is not over. Sooner or later the US will have to start taking out Iranian military targets. You want to prevent what happened on 07 Oct. again. Clip Iran's wings.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP02 Dec 2023 9:52 p.m. PST

The time for EVs is not quiet here yet. They need infrastructure and tech support. The new lithium deposits in CA, huge new chip factories here, new battery designs, all coming. We are said to be the Saudi Arabia of lithium deposits. But it will take a few more years to really take off.

We don't have any new leadership but the day will come.

Legion we are are still here because of guys like you. And we still pass on our capabilities and values, even though we sometimes disagree.

I keep telling you the POTUS is not what matters. The right stuff is still what's baked into us. Changes come and go some good some not. But many times the newcomers are great additions. They work hard, don't take the USA for granted. Our own ancestors were newcomers, were often treated poorly. They learned and they committed to the core values. It keeps on working. Many problems to solve but it keeps on working.

Leadership is at many levels. It's about more than one guy.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP05 Dec 2023 9:30 a.m. PST

Leadership is at many levels. It's about more than one guy.
Yes, it is, and many are in the admin and in Congress are to blame. And elsewhere in Gov't.

I was trained that you are responsible for everything those under your command do and fail to do.

Who is the CinC ? Just say'n …

Again, I see weak, feckless leadership in many places and partisanism across the board. Even to the point that many in our Gov't, the UN, Women's groups, etc., are not coming down hard on the horror that Hamas did on 07 Oct.

There is no way to say it otherwise … The US Gov't needs to stand firm condemning these war crimes. But our leadership know an election is coming. And they don't want to upset the supporters of Palestine, Hamas/islamic terrorism, the intellectual academics, etc. That are calling Israel the white oppressors. Does that sound familiar ?

I know you never were in the Military. But, just like me you study history. I have seen real leadership in action take charge and get things done. That is not happening … For all the reasons I have mentioned before … 'nuff said …

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP05 Dec 2023 1:27 p.m. PST

I understand what you are saying. I do not discuss my government service much. Let's call it law enforcement. I served under good leaders and bad. I tended to do things my way in the field after a while because of the nature of my work. I could not afford to let a bad leader affect outcomes. At some point they would leave me alone because I knew my job better than they did.

This has colored my perspective on people like POTUS over the years. Every time there was an election, new people got appointed to lead. I did not care. The bad guys did not magically stop being bad guys and my job was the same. Don't be fooled. No amount of hot air ever made a difference. Some wars never end.

This government is afraid to alienate any ethnic group. But there are bad people and good people across the board. They need to call out the actions of Hamas first and foremost without regard for ethnicity. These are clearly murderers, up close and personal, fanatic.

Deal with the Israelis later. They have some issues but are nothing like Hamas. To all politicians…Keep your eye on the ball, face the Hamas threat, help find the hostages if any are left. Bring justice to Iran. Then you can talk about other issues.

And don't forget about Putin…

Same here … but more good than bad.

Bingo !!!

Don't be fooled. No amount of hot air ever made a difference. Some wars never end.
I'm too old to be fooled.old fart And yes, some wars never end. We are still hunting down ISIS and other islamic terrorists.

Not to mention we are still in a state of war with North Korea.

I do feel even once Gaza is in IDF positive control. They must continue hunt down Hamas, etc. etc. No mercy no quarter …

but are nothing like Hamas. To all politicians…Keep your eye on the ball, face the Hamas threat, help find the hostages if any are left. Bring justice to Iran
I agree … But I don't think this admin will punish Iran. They are deluded by their corrupted dogma. They have to see Iran's leaders, IRGC, etc. are enemies to the US and many others in the world…

Putin we should never forget what is going on the "Eastern Front". But I'm concerned about the Ukraine getting what it needs to defeat the Russian imperialists.

I am hoping we are doing the same to them cyberwise.

Doubt it for various reasons. The main problem is human factors and private industry, even with big ransomware attacks, they seem slow to invest in cybersecurity. I'm not personally aware of any government in the West that's looking to pass the kind of legislation that would really drive companies to seriously invest either directly or by increasing the penalties for breaches.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP15 Dec 2023 7:15 a.m. PST

These are very future oriented ships, and the Japanese are extremely good at this. They also have a long naval tradition and a renewed commitment to naval development. They help add a new wrinkle to any Chinese plans for Taiwan.
