Yes,I am sure they can weaponize a container and have done so. Maybe not the greatest idea for a country looking to dominate the worlds economy. Although the latest is that unemployment is climbing fast there and confidence in the economy is fading.

As we know there are a lot of things the CCP and Russians do we have no clue. Again … they are the bad guys vs. the West.

Their is bigger than the USA's. Of course the USN is supposed to be better than the PRC/CCP Navy. But it appears the US military overall is not what it was or should be. With the US top leadership telling the Military Climate change is it's #1 priority.

The US is in a de facto war with Russia & China. War time leaders have to be seen as very competent, tough, resilient, very "smart", etc., that enemy respects & maybe even fears. I don't think that is what the enemy sees. Yes, nor do I and many others …

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP31 Aug 2023 9:27 p.m. PST

We are better…for now. I am not sure about the overall state of the US military vs China, but I would not bet against us. I also wonder about all that political training the Chinese waste their time on, 20x more than we do.

But we can never let down our guard.

Of course I consider pronoun confusion to be a major threat to any US mission. But I doubt we have dropped everything to tackle climate change and the army is slow on things like this. I don't think adding some climate change prep to the agenda is anything other than prudent as long as nothing else suffers

And then there are the political appointee generals and admirals in China. Rewards for Xi's buddies, hundreds of them. All untested commanders, all untested troops and sailors, pilots. It takes years to build the institutional trained core of people to man and competently run a highly complex warship effectively.

I would hope that the Russians and Chinese are ignorant enough to underestimate us, assume we are weak. But I think they are too smart not to fear us despite our occasional screwups. Russia does not think they are better than us at this point with the mess they have made, I would guess. China has no real track record. Anything they do will be a gamble.

Any time I start to wonder about us, I ask myself- which navy, army, etc would I rather have that that of the US.?

We are better…for now. I am not sure about the overall state of the US military vs China, but I would not bet against us.
The US has fought well and, in some cases, successfully in many conflicts. If nothing else we kill many, many more of our enemies than they inflict on us. But as we see that meant little in the end in places like in, Korea Vietnam, Somalia, the Gulf Wars and A'stan.

I will always take the US Military over anyone else's. But as we frequently did in the Army. We were very much always being tested, evaluated, etc. You can't say we are the "best" if we always are training & evaluated/testing to get and remain the "Top Guns".

Yes, that takes a commitment from the US gov't to not only give the US Military the $ to get the job done. And not directing $ & time should be wasted on anything that does not prep for combat, taking care of the troops & their families. Which as we see of late barracks, family housing and even in one case[that I know of] the 1st CAV's troops are not being properly fed. That is unimaginable to me and many of my friends that are Vets.

Again, the Gov'ts priorities are wrong in many cases, IMO. Which I have listed before. And we have talked this over many times.

But we can never let down our guard.
Of course, we were not ready for WWII. But because of our economic power and will. We came back with a vengeance plus help supply our allies, etc.

I would hope that the Russians and Chinese are ignorant enough to underestimate us, assume we are weak.
The Russians have been trying to destroy us for decades. But as we see they are not a threat save for their nukes. As has been demonstrated in the Ukraine. The Biggest threat to the Russian troops is Putin plus his GENs & ADMs.

The PRC/CCP knows how to play the long game … And no doubt at times numbers can be telling. However, they don't have the experience in naval, air and even amph ops, etc. But they may be willing to expends those numbers accomplish their goals.

But as students of Sun Tzu, they are defeating their enemy without firing a shot. They own & control too much of everything in the US. Not mention all the goods that the US has to get from China. Plus, the Chinese drugs coming across our very open Southern Border. Killing 1000s of Americans. I don't think this is an accident.

Any time I start to wonder about us, I ask myself- which navy, army, etc would I rather have that that of the US.?
Of course, as you know my military background.

Yes, of course, and much appreciated!

SBminisguy01 Sep 2023 1:32 p.m. PST

I also wonder about all that political training the Chinese waste their time on, 20x more than we do.

I think we're trying to close that gap as fast we can under the current POTUS! Can't let the Chinese get ahead in terms of political indoctrination training, no siree!

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2023 3:32 p.m. PST

The pronoun thing is a menace in my opinion. The rest of it needs to be keep proportional to whatever is actually going on in the army. If there is a problem, fix it. Racism and sexual harassment will alway be present in such a huge group, it's like a big city. But the army has a justice system. Use it.

We will never catch up to the Chinese on this! They pay homage to a cult figure. They are said to spend up to 40 per cent of their training on this stuff.
We spent a little over two hours a person on a four part awareness training. Reviewing the oath, understanding the regs, reporting abuse, and Q and A. Plus extremism in the service review. Six million hours a year total. I think physical conditioning is about 800 million man hours a year.

But again, use the justice system for problems. We train 20,000 army MPs a year.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2023 6:26 p.m. PST

Yes, of course, and much appreciated!
And Thank you for that.

The only reason I mention my military experience and training for over a decade in my long-passed youth. old fart Is to give "creds" to what I say as to what I have done & know a number of things dealing with the military, military history, etc. Especially with all types of Infantry operations, combined arms, etc. having led a Rifle Plt and commanded a Mech Co. etc. Like with many things one can read about it, watch it on TV, war game it, etc. But that does not give all the practical knowledge, abilities, etc. of being there. E.g. I can talk to someone about running a night patrol, but until one does it … it's not the same thing. 😎

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2023 7:01 p.m. PST

Yes and your experience, and others here, has helped me branch out and understand all kinds of things. Except maybe some of the acronyms which I have had to look up…🤔😁

This sounded interesting until I got to option 2 and realized there was some sort of agenda here.

A blockade would present everyone with economic issues- including China. It requires significant resources and coordination for a navy full of Xi's political buddies in command who have never run a serious large scale operation. I think it would take about a week for something to go wrong, maybe to everyone's regret. Xi has a fleet in being and it must be considered as a powerful force. Once it starts this, we will all get an idea of how good they really are.

He mentions the power of the 4 carrier battle groups in the Cuban missile crisis, very intimidating. Imagine twice that in the Pacific, when the Chinese might have two at best.

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2023 6:19 p.m. PST

And….the best response from the Allies might be to just cut off oil shipments from the Saudis to China on the Indian Ocean route. I know I have been repeating myself a lot on this over the last year, but here is an article from the Naval Institute.

link

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP03 Sep 2023 7:29 a.m. PST

Will anyone be able to convince the KSA to stop sending oil to the PRC ? I have my doubts …

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP03 Sep 2023 10:43 a.m. PST

No, I don't think so either, at least they would try.

But they have no navy to stop anyone in the Indian Ocean from turning back the tankers. Maybe a dozen frigates at this point, some are brand new this year. All foreign built. I don't think the Chinese would commit enough vessels to escort all of this shipping over a vast distance, , it would weaken them in waters closer to home. I guess they would all have to complain to the UN!

They can use their oil as a weapon, but they also may hurt themselves doing this.

Tango01 Supporting Member of TMP03 Sep 2023 9:29 p.m. PST

They can used the land to any transportation … and air too…

Armand

Tortorella Supporting Member of TMP04 Sep 2023 6:09 a.m. PST

Armand, I think you can get enough oil into China to run their economy except by ship. The scale is just too big, IMO.
