My 48 hours of offsetting publishing on social media for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is now up and I can, at last, present to you the next unit in my growing Thematic Byzantine army.

This unit represents a body of soldiery living on the margins of the Themes. Lightly armoured "Light" cavalry used in the main for scouting though sometimes in battle they might be called upon to take the role of Defensores and/or Cursores and to this end I will be adding a back rank of six Hippo Toxotai. The unit will contain six for Hippo Toxotai per unit to act as Defensores and four Hippo Toxotai for Defensores. I hope that makes sense!?!

More pictures of the unit and some close ups of each miniature can be seen on my Just Add Water Blog here:

For now, here are some images of both the unit and a couple of close ups:

Cheers

Made my day. I love the Eastern Roman army of this era and your painting is amazing. Waiting for more!

Very very nice. What paints did you use for the gray-blue?

Another beautifully painted unit.

I like the idea that the themata would not have had matching horses, since everybody supplied his own horse. Matching horses are more a regular cavalry sort of thing that you would expect of the tagmata.

Toynbee has good things to say about the themata in his book, Constantine Porphyrogenitus and His World, though it was written back in the 1960s or 70s.

And, yes, I do like the paint job.

Thank you for all the positive comments guys.

What paints did you use for the gray-blue?

Ah, unusually I can actually remember- probably because it was a Citadel paint and I don't normally use them.

It's Citadel Fenris Grey, knocked down a shade with Andrea Navy Blue and knocked up a shade by adding Vallejo Model Colour Ivory

Can you give me a few examples as to what info is contained as please?

I've found a second hand copy but it's quite expensive to say the least!

Thanks
