Any suggestions on a WWI beer and pretzels rule set that is well suited to 6mm miniatures and can be played in under 2 hours? Hopefully at the platoon level or higher. Regiment or company level would be ideal.

I am looking for something that is simple and accessible enough to get my non-wargaming friends interested and would be accessible to my early teen kids who have taken and interest in wargame but are new to them.

But I would like it to have enough detail for it to have a distinctive WWI feel when playing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've never played it, but a friend of mine had good things to say about Peter Pig's Square Bashing. It's written for 15mm, but I have to think it would be a relatively easy adjust down to 6mm.

Raging Empires from Kallistra. Free download from here: link

For their 12mm WWI range, should be fine as is for 6mm- ranges will look better. While they measure in hexes for their excellent Hexxon II terrain system, just know they are in increments of 4 inches. There is also support downloads at the URL I provided. I believe these are a nice fit for what you were looking for. Can't beat the price!

There is this battle w/rules from the Junior General website.

What is nice is his website also has paper soldiers you can use to play all of the different scenarios for all of the different era's. To top it off, it is all free.

Maybe not quite the level you are looking for, but I recall a divisional level set in an old Wargames Illustrated (maybe late summer 1996, maybe called "Wheel to Wheel") which was set on a small board with 6mm figs in strips (4 bases to a battalion?). I never got to try it but it looked good.

Be sure to let us know which set you selected. Others reading this thread may want to know besides me.

I am sure I will eventually give all of these a try. I think I will start with square bashing. I might not have been clear in the first post that I was looking for something where the basic maneuverer unit was a company or regiment. Not the whole army. But all of these looked good.

Apologies, in case you were looking for it: it was WI September 1995, issue 96 …
