The "Great Battles" project, of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, visited the area of Bakhmut where fierce battles have been ongoing for many months. Our goal is to tell you about a unit that has held the city's defences since the start of this full-scale war, and is hardly ever mentioned by journalists…

Noticed 3 important things.

Little or no 18 to 22 year olds.

They fight smart, not reckless.

They used local knowledge for maximum effect.

This is anecdotal but gives a reference. Territorial defence battalion nr 243 have fought in Bakmut for a few weeks and suffered 101 Casualties out of 250 deployed. These figures break down into 8 KIA and 93 WIA.

The unit is/was no longer combat effective due to almost 50% casualties. But dead were quite low, 8 KIA.

The battalion was pulled out of the frontline and replaced. The majority of the wounded will heal and will return to the unit. Some quicker than others but the number of permanent losses are acceptable.

So yes, I'm sure that Ukraine can lose three digit soldiers during single days in dead AND wounded but that the losses are "acceptable" and more importantly can be replaced.

Ukraine has a very well function med evac system. Even soldiers with fairly light wounds are evacuated. This is important for morale. Knowing you will be taken care of and receive care is important. Troopers are evacuated even when they do not want to, but want to continue to fight.
