Imagine that you're painting a figure with black hair. You've basecoated in black, now what color do you highlight with?

American Drab has always been my go to.

Red is gray, and yellow white,
but we decide which is right.

…and which is an illusion.

I wouldn't basecoat in black. I basecoat in payne's gray or prussian blue, then shade with black magic wash. The magic wash provides a sheen and this part of the figure, I would keep the shine, not overcoat with matte varnish.

Answering the question, you can't highlight black. The Batman comic book method is to use deep blue. Or, use gloss varnish or possibly satin.

I've tried a gray highlight and either there's not enough so it disappears, or too much and you have an iron gray figure.
