A bit of a culture shock this week as I have been persuaded away from my 15mm comfort zone to paint 28mm ACW plastic Perrys for playing Black Powder.

The larger size of figures proved a bit of a hassle as my brushes were too small and I am used to being able to paint one arm or one leg with one or two movements in 15mm. In 28s it is more like four or six movements with small brushes. A trip to The Works (a UK High Street chain) produced bigger brushes. The Works currently has a sale on brushes.

Starting with the Perry plastic artillery set I took a tip from 'Uncle Atom' (Tabletop Minons) and drilled out the gun muzzles with two pin drills from Hobbycraft. Uncle Atom reckons it is worth the effort and I agree with him.

One problem I had was with the Humbrol matt poly which I had brushed on thin as a base primer coat over the (washed) plastic. When I put a thin poly gloss varnish over the finished acrylic paint, the white spirit somehow penetrated and melted part of the primer paint back to bare plastic. Oddly, on the officer's trousers, it looked like severe wear or faded 'shoddy' clothing so I left it as is but I will have to change my undercoating.

I will post a YouTube short about using the drills in due course.

I think you should be priming with an acrylic option, paint with acrylic and varnish with acrylic.

Agree. All acrylics from primer to paints, top with Dulcote varnish.

Take a gander at Sonic Sledgehammer's ("How I paint things") YouTube channel. It will really help, regardless if ACW or not. Your 15mm skills will not transfer over to 28mm (or vice versa). But you'll get the hang of 28mm quickly.

@both:
Thank you for your advice. I will cease priming with poly on plastic.
