What are your reasons?

rmaker09 Jan 2023 9:55 p.m. PST

I see no need for one.

evilgong09 Jan 2023 10:03 p.m. PST

table clutter

Clutter and noise, rolling on the table is quicker too.

Martin Rapier10 Jan 2023 2:32 a.m. PST

Just more junk to clutter up the table. A dice tray is much neater.

Dexter Ward10 Jan 2023 3:14 a.m. PST

A box lid serves the purpose better and is neater

Only makes sense in very particular situations. We've played quite a few hex and counter games at Pizza Hut and Starbucks and with those very public settings and relatively small tables, it makes sense. Otherwise, let those dice FLY!

rustymusket10 Jan 2023 6:15 a.m. PST

table clutter and why spend the money on one. Some might look nice in a fantasy setting, though.

whitphoto10 Jan 2023 6:45 a.m. PST

noise

Northern Rebel10 Jan 2023 7:29 a.m. PST

Noise. A nice felt lined dice tray on either side of the table is the best way in my opinion.

redmist112210 Jan 2023 8:29 a.m. PST

I think that covers it.

Clutter, expense, noise.

Agreed – trays are just so much easier

I do use them, but sporadically for certain events; but in general trays work much better.

HMS Exeter10 Jan 2023 11:09 a.m. PST

I've always felt they bog things down. It may just be a few heartbeats each roll, but it does get exasperating.

Grattan54 Supporting Member of TMP10 Jan 2023 11:17 a.m. PST

I have never seen the need for one. Also, it would add clutter.

Stryderg Supporting Member of TMP10 Jan 2023 11:30 a.m. PST

My dice yearn to be free, rolling across the table with reckless abandon, flaunting their rebellious nature and refusing to be constrained by a mere tower! At least, that's what they said when I asked.

DeRuyter10 Jan 2023 11:32 a.m. PST

+1 to all the previously cited examples. I use dice trays or nothing depending on the circumstances.

I see towers as more of a boardgame thing tbh.

14Bore10 Jan 2023 1:06 p.m. PST

I do, hated dice finding a clear spot then trying to run away

control?

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP10 Jan 2023 9:55 p.m. PST

I don't use one because I still have the rudimentary motor skills required to not fling dice into figures, off terrain, onto the floor, or off the wall.

CeruLucifus11 Jan 2023 12:49 a.m. PST

Dice towers seem to take longer, plus they take table space away.

A tray or box lid will control the dice and you can stack things on it.

Rich Bliss11 Jan 2023 10:20 a.m. PST

I have three which I use depending on the game,

One is disguised as a copse of trees

One is a Renaissance Italy Building

One is a SF industrial building.

I resisted for a long time, and accepted the limitations imposed by NOT having a dice tower, but after seeing some very attractive wooden ones employed at Gamehole Con last year, in settings where they made good sense (RPGs, minis, boardgames, all with limited table space), I conceded that they have their place, and bought a nice custom-made wood one off an Etsy seller. There will be times when this will be a useful tool, informal gaming or at cons.

I like the idea but I don't like the clutter. I hate clutter on my game table. The noise it would make when playing TSATF and other buckets of dice games would be annoying.

Dagwood14 Jan 2023 4:10 a.m. PST

I don't use a dice tower because …

I haven't built it yet !

Mollinary17 Jan 2023 11:54 a.m. PST

I use one for C&C boardgames, but for To the Strongest or For King & Parliament figure games I use bags of chits marked 1-10. No dice!

Personal logo Sgt Slag Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2023 3:37 p.m. PST

I used chits, for dice, when I played Moldvay Basic D&D, circa 1980. We put them in Dixie Cups. I HATED those chits! We finally bought some low-impact dice, which rounded quickly, but even those crappy dice were better than chits.

Obviously we are in different camps, staring across the Dead Zone at one another. Reminds me of WW I's trench warfare… Let the artillery barrage begin! LOL! Cheers!
