Afternoon all,

You may remember my post from earlier on in the year "what does a wargamer do with £1.00 GBP of matchsticks?"

Well, today I refought Austerlitz using the DBN rules and about 25p worth of the matchsticks, and I have to say it was really good fun and opens up a lot of possibilities – you can find out more, as well as who won the battle by clicking the link to my blog below

I think that this is a really cost effective way of fighting those large battles that otherwise you wouldn't get the opportunity to refight, unless you were very lucky.

As always, comments, suggestions and feedback welcome

Kind Regards

J

Your game looked very cool, something I would definitely play. That being said, me personally, I still prefer figures.

Nicely done. It looked way better than I expected. Happy New Year!

It definitely gives more of an army look than just colored plastic dominoes, which is what I have been doing. Thanks.

Very inventive! 😉

You have proven that wargaming can be very cheap!

The band Status Quo would be very proud of you. Great job on them!

Yes, because he's posted pictures of matchstick men.

Nothing new. Wargamers (including me) have been making armies from matchsticks since the 70s. I still have some packed away somewhere…

Superb!

This is not a criticism, but did you consider using green pillowcases? Also, can I ask how many "units" are involved?

Very close to a boardgame.

GeorgBuchner06 Nov 2023 5:32 p.m. PST

well except unlike a boardgame its not moving by hexes – one could always use just 2d flats for any miniatures game too, going the other way

in any case, i like the way matchsticks hav ebeen used. I wonder if one could carve them ever so slightly to make individual pieces of the artillery limbers and such more distinct as they just look a little like like ww2 panzer troop vehicles from afar – just a little chip in them might make a difference even – but it makes me want to go and try out this myself some time

A great idea.

Could one try to recreate the true "footprint" of an infantry column or line, gun battery and train, cavalry etc? I mean with several rows of matchsticks for each unit, just to add to the spectacle.

I always loved 28mm figures for display but could not help being troubled by them in wargames. A cavalry unit charging hell for leather, 3 inches away from a line of infantry, blissfully at attention or marching with arms shouldered. It just looked wrong.

Indeed, excellent idea. THis is a creative way to expand the hobby!
