I'm looking for something that may not exist but giving it a shot. I'm looking for a set of skirmish rules that also cover games made up of tribal (non-firearm) vs tribal groups. Having firearms spread among the figs works, I'm just not looking for "for line of fire" vs natives type of games. Maybe a pirate game would work but are there rules that would handle the majority of figures armed with hand-hand weapons? I have Donnybrook and TSATF Africa, which may be the best I can do. I don't want to do much/if any rule writing so a dark age skirmish game where I'd have to come up with shooting rules is not something to do. I've seen Tribal but I like dice so not sure if I want to do a card only system. My goal is some Africa based games with a few gun carriers like pirates, slavers, European supplied to a few units; but also be able to have games of tribe vs tribe.

Maybe have a look at these. Disclosure I haven't played them but it does sound like it's designed for what you want

Thanks for the link. Yep I saw those. Not into card-only games but barring anything else fitting the bill they may be my only option. Would like to hear from someone who's played them.

Take a look at Irregular Wars or the updated version Fantastic Battles. May be able to solve your problem.

Another vote for Irregular Wars. Doesn't use single figures but bases representing groups of fighters. Simple mechanisms and fun to play rather than 'realistic' but a game can switch from disaster to triumph very quickly.

Yep I saw the basing, watching the youtube discussion. Only thing is I have no figures based in groups and all are single, won't be doing it in the future. Looking for more skirmish sizes (20-30 minis per side max).

Donnybrook is very good, and works well even if no firearms

Sounds pretty much like Congo to me. Although nominally set in 19th Century "Darkest Africa", I've heard suggestions that it could just as easily be used for S.E. Asia (Settlers, local princedoms, Borneo headhunters &c) or Central Americal ("Lost Expedition" territory).

One of my favourite sets of rules: link

I forgot all about Congo. I'll re-read through Donnybrook also. I've been watching Viv's old Tribal play learn-to-play videos and that looks interesting as well.

Have you looked at Flint & Feather? The main focus id pre-gunpowder Indigenous combat.

An interesting one is Tribal

Yes, I agree, A Good Day to Die by Chris Peers would work well.

Also, Song of Drums and Tomahawks works well for what you are looking for.

Striker,
Tribal is a good game. It takes a few turns to get used to the mechanics, but it works. I've even played it solo.

Lots to check out. I've got Tribal coming and may pick up Congo.

Also in the Chris Peers line

Mega dittos to Extra Crispy. Congo is a great skirmish game. Originally set in late colonial Africa with Euro, Arab, and two different native cultures. I have expanded the temporal-spatial domain to WW1 in East Africa. Pirates in Africa 1700, Vikings vs Skraelings in Vineland, Carl Denham on Skull Island, Romans vs Druids 46AD Britain, others have done HEI Company vs Thuggees, conquistadors vs Aztecs, Lost City of Z, exploring Venus, and others.
