I was hoping to find the color of Gen Meade's horse, it turns out the horse's head is actually stuffed on the wall of a museum, Godfather style. Not sure how I feel about displaying the remains of a (wounded!) war veteran like this, but at least I know what color to paint the horse? Some interesting information anyway, there's a bit more on the wiki page for Old Baldy.

Sort of creepy. I know that "Trigger" was stuffed as a museum
display. But I think he should have been buried near Meade. But to dig him up just for that? Well, I now have another horse to add to my list of General's horses.

I got to see Old Baldy many years ago during a visit to the GAR Museum. Little Sorrel, Jackson's horse is also able to be visited. The entire horse is on display in Lexington, VA.

Why does a stuffed head bother me more than the whole animal stuffed?

Because a stuffed head is intended as a trophy.

Other famous horses from history include Comanche, the last survivor of Little Big Horn, and Sheridan's Rienzi.

Yep, I've seen Trigger. (For you youngsters, he was the famous horse of movie-cowboy Roy Rogers. A palomino -- the horse, not Roy.)

Seems like that horse head juts out a lot for a smallish room. It's almost like, when you walk past him, he can take a nibble out of your muffin.

Seems like there's been a fight over where to showcase him:

And Larry Gettysburg Soldiers is onto something, seems like a lot of people dont like the idea of just mounting Old Baldy's head:

I think Larry's right, the trophy factor is particularly unnerving, especially compared to the more respectful mountings. Maybe part of a bigger debate about displaying remains, but I always found the story of the pianist who donated his skull to be used as 'Yorick' in Hamlet to be really fascinating, although clearly he made the decision himself!

I didn't make any friends at the VMI museum by pointing out what a moth-eaten poor specimen of taxidermy Little Sorrel is.
