Late Southern Campaign thoughts -

Trying to decide a few extra British units. I have the Guilford CH OOB, so looking at what to add. Here is what I am thinking -

1st & 2nd Guard Bns (I also have Converged Gren and Light units)
23rd Foot
33rd Foot
Von Bose Regt (with a separate Jager unit)
2/71st Highlanders
17th Dragoons
Converged Light Bn
British Legion (Dragoons and Foot)
Volunteers of Ireland
New York Volunteers

If I want to add 2-3 more units (probably militia/Loyalists), thoughts?

The British Legion infantry was lost at Cowpens.

Volunteers of Ireland would be my vote. Along with 17th Dragoons.

Hi

3rd Regiment of Foot (the Buffs), fought at Eutaw Springs. My Dads Regiment 1939 – 1946!

Cheers Paul

What are you trying to do? Some units such as the 71st had extensive involvement in the Southern campaigns. Other units such as the Guards and Bose had much more limited involvement. You can identify the actions you want to do and collect those units, or you can do a few key units and them do stand ins for the rest.

When it comes to the Loyalists, good luck. It is not clear what uniforms many of those units wore in the Southern campaigns. It is also possible they changed during the campaign.

Generic redcoats do for a lot of units, including loyalists. Blue facings.

If you are doing actions below the big battles, you want lots of loyalist militia. Does anyone know what sorts of field signs patriot and loyalist militia used?

The detachment of the 17th Light Dragoons were part of Tarleton's Legion cavalry.

My goal is to have an OOB that would allow campaigning parts of the Southern Campaign, both at a 1:15 battle level and also a skirmish level

I thought is to do have as a based the full Guilford OOB, then add units that could be substituted for other engagements throughout the period. And I can substitute a few for others.

What I think I am most missing are a few Loyalist units.

"The British Legion infantry was lost at Cowpens."

Most of the BL infantry was lost at Cowpens. What was left of the infantry was sent to Charleston. The cavalry part of the British Legion was at Guilford Courthouse commanded by Tarleton.

Lawrence Babits in his study of Cowpens states that the Legion infantry was captured. For all intents and purposes, the Legion infantry ceased to exist as a cohesive unit.

Tarleton's dragoons were indeed at Guilford Courthourse. They did not impact the battle, at least not in any decisive way such as Washington's light dragoons did.

Definitely Loyalist units. That will expand your scenario options. If you want to play Cowpens for example, you'll need the BL.

If you are trying to represent the actions of the Southern Campaign, you would be hard pressed to find units more heavily involved than the British Legion, foot and mounted, Yes, the infantry took a lot of punishment but they were a big part of things until then. Besides, they look really cool. Other Tory units would be good too, but I would be tempted to paint them up in mostly green. Maybe not historical, but it adds colors. Have fun doing what you want. After all, you are recruiting them, General.
