You were asked – TMP link

Does the Frank Herbert Universe lend itself to large scale wargaming in 10-28mm ?

And in the final, tiebreaker round of voting:

38% said "no"
33% said "yes"
12% said "not familiar with Dune/Frank Herbert"

I don't think it'd do well above 15mm, but at that scale, I'd think yes. Rebel Minis has a SciFi line with lots of potential.

The main drawback is very few scifi figs a re wielding blades.

I think it could possibly work, but you'd have to fudge a lot of things because Herbert's description of large scale combat is pretty darn sketchy. You had troops wearing personal shields what will stop anything like a bullet or shrapnel. Las guns will slice through most anything solid, but if they hit a shield there will be a feedback explosion that destroys both the gun and the shield in explosions which can range in size from a hand grenade to a near-nuke. Herbert seems to think that limits ground combat to hand-to-hand fighting with bladed weapons which if wielded properly can penetrate a shield. But it seems as though las gun armed drones could be sent against shielded troops and if the feedback destroys the drone, no problem since it would also destroy the target and maybe other enemies nearby. On Dune itself, the static electricity from all the dust can short out shields and in the deep desert the presence of shields attracts sand worms and drives them into a killing frenzy. So no shields, but why not las guns there? I could go on, but you get the idea.

There was a video game set on Dune, like C&C. No mention of the shields.
