Real world animals have "official" collective nouns. So do military units (we frequently "discuss" using the "right" ones and the "wrong" ones here). But what about fantasy, pulp, scifi, or other genres …?

A flit of elves
A tankard of dwarves
A clutch of dragons

A shuffle zombies
A rattle of skeletons

A clip of gangsters
A tank of deep ones
A drift of yeti
A skiff of pirates

A spectrum of LGM
A wash of greys
A shadow of MiB

No, no! A DRUM of gangsters. Machine Gun Kelly didn't fool around with some wimpy clip.

Not sure about Dwarves. Probably a dwelving of them. Possibly a mine.

Then, maybe a clip of gangstas?

Makes it period specific. But I also need a different one for Yakuza, then …

Fun!
I particularly like a clutch of dragons, a shuffle of zombies, and a rattle of skeletons.

It is surely a shortage of dwarves!

RittervonBek for the win.

A keg of dwarves…. a tankard is not enough!

Ritter's right.
Possibly a counsel of Elves, but a flit of fairies?

SpuriousMilius07 Dec 2022 9:37 a.m. PST

A Confusion of Chaotics. A Mass of Minsters. A Burrow of Bunnies.

A goblet of goblins?

How about

A snootiness of Elves
A blaze of Dragons

While a shortage of Dwarves is cool, I also like a keg of dwarves, but how about a grudge of dwarves

A Holiness of Clerics

An Ugliness of Orks

A Pester of Goblins

Rhubarb 63307 Dec 2022 11:53 a.m. PST

A bootleg of gangsters

A delve of dwarves

A probe of greys

A gob of goblins

A charnel of ghouls

A rot of zombies

A conceit of elves

Pretty pathetic pirates if all they can pilfer is a skiff… ;-)

While the collective nouns here don't have any implication of maximum size, I was thinking minimum viable sized force.

It would be a scurvy lot of sea dogs that could pillage up and down a coast and drive away the Limey with only a skifful of them …

I am using a probe of greys next weekend in a game.

I like a pester of goblins, but I have always called it a snot of goblins.

I also like that the suggestions for elves go both in the positive and negative direction. :)

A butchery of orks?
A fractal of chaotics?
A brunch of ghouls?

Also, a fave from an old fantasy story in an anthology, A Plagueof Butterflies.
