TMP has had a lot of posts about Warlord's Epic ACW range, but I haven't seen much about the rules that come with the set. Has anyone played the "Epic" rules? If so, what did you think of them?

JimDuncanUK29 Nov 2022 10:03 a.m. PST

Aren't the EPIC rules Black Powder 2?

Steamingdave229 Nov 2022 10:29 a.m. PST

JimDuncan is right; just a rehash of Black Powder and some canny marketing by Warlord.

Yeah its just Black Powder, nothing new.

I owned BP 1st ed, and that was a hardback book. These are a small booklet. Are they BP Light?

The small booklet is an A5 version of Black Powder 2, content is identical as far as I can see.

Thanks for the info.

Same rules with a few additions for the scale. Use either centimeters instead of inches or half scale

Yep – used them for ACW – as noted, BP with shorter distances

The Epic Scale box also comes with a stripped down and slightly modified version of the <Glory Hallelujah> ACW rules, which are generally pretty good. They do give BP a somewhat more ACW "feel. "

I agree with HansPeterB. The Epic Scale rules and minis have the right feel for ACW. I have used them extensively and always enjoyed each game very much.

Thanks to all. I will give them a try.

For reference, the ACW Epic rulebook is just a smaller (physically) version of Black Powder 2. The version that comes in the Napoleonic Epic starter sets is however a redone version of Black Powder 2 focusing on Napoleonics and having images of the Epic figures. I'm pretty sure the rules are the same but it has extra Napoleonic focused content.
