Probably the first castle in England to be captured by artillery. It was one of the castles held by the Percy Earls of Northumberland but was then captured during the Wars of the Roses and used as a base by Warwick the Kingmaker to attack Alnwick, Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh. 30 different views of the building and a long write-up under each picture. Warkworth town has a classic layout – Percy castle at top, market place in middle with burgage plots either side, church at the base, river. Later Georgian coaching inns leading to bridge. |

The one thing I regret was not getting enough time in the town and the church as it rained heavily and drove us out. I also spotted a medieval gate near the bridge which looked interesting. Not my picture but this one: link B |

If you go upriver from the fortified bridge, westward, you can follow the boundary of the medieval town/village wall that encloses the burgage plots. |

Thank you guys. My hope is to inspire model-makers, etc, which is why I now try to include close-ups of architectural details for people who live outside of Europe and may not be aware of how they go together. Barry |
