I think it was the Hastati who had the pectoral. The Principes in the next line had mail. |

Actually, in the WRG book (Armies of Macedonian and Punic wars) it says the Pectorale was government issue, for citizens too poor to buy their own. I suspect it is probable more Hastati, being the youngest, would be Government supplied, so to a degree, I agree with you. I reckon probably both had a mix of armour types, with the Hastati less well armoured. As ever, no one knows for sure! |
