Nice! – I always thought Principes were not in mail, having a Pectorale, but maybe I am still stuck in the old days with WRG Armies and Enemies!!!

I think it was the Hastati who had the pectoral. The Principes in the next line had mail.

Actually, in the WRG book (Armies of Macedonian and Punic wars) it says the Pectorale was government issue, for citizens too poor to buy their own.
I suspect it is probable more Hastati, being the youngest, would be Government supplied, so to a degree, I agree with you. I reckon probably both had a mix of armour types, with the Hastati less well armoured.
As ever, no one knows for sure!
