American Battlefield Trust is raising funds to buy a half acre plot of land just north of the ground where Pickett's Charge occurred. Here is a link to making donations where every $1 USD donated is being matched by $3 USD … link |

I'm conflicted! Gotta admit I would miss General Pickett's Buffet! I only need two more stamps on my free meal card. |

I was going to donate a modest $25.00 USD but the minimum amount you can give is $50.00 USD |

Honestly I sort of like the buffet. It's very American in so many ways. I have a soft spot for that and the Good n Plenty In Lancaster |

Old Contemptible there is a a place for "other" amount at bottom. I donate at least yearly to this organization. They will take any amount. They have preserved a lot of military related field space in this country, not just Civil War anymore. |

You can donate any amount. Type the amount in the empty box below the designated cash donations. |

The restaurant selling the property is moving to a different location, apparently for a better parking situation. It seems the owner(s) are interested in selling it for preservation first, and not instead to a developer. And hopefully the restaurant will still recognize Larry's meal card, after two more stamps give him a free meal, and I can't imagine why they wouldn't. By the way … imagine this … after the sale of the land with it's preservation and upgrade to an educational viewing location of the Picket's Charge area, the next time anyone that donates and then visits Gettysburg, they can say they helped finance this spot's preservation. Thank you! |

educational viewing location of the Picket's Charge Will it be correctly interpreting that Pickett's Charge was perpetrated by traitors in an effort to maintain slavery? |

Mr Elmo, with all due respect, that was out of line. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, but why inject that into a discussion of preserving land on the Gettysburg battlefield. |

Mr. Elmo: Lee's sole motivation was to establish a future site for tourists to engage in interstate commerce. |

Lee's sole motivation Well, for God sake don't put up a Confederate monument. I like outlet malls as much as the next guy. |

It is hallowed ground … none of the land where the battle took place should be touched. |

I would totally agree about hallowed ground. Only been there once but I was so impressed by the degree of preservation (for which the US is brilliant, compared with so many European sites). OK, I could wish fewer monuments along the ridge top, but they are very longstanding. The Pickett's Buffet is in a truly inappropriate position (but very, very convenient to get back to The Angle) but, again, it is there now. The question is what to do with it once abandoned. |
