"The UK will pay France £8.00 GBPm more a year under a revised deal to try to stop people crossing the English Channel in small boats."

Or should we call them 'Hessians'

Brechtel19814 Nov 2022 6:33 a.m. PST

What does the referenced article have to do with the War of the Revolution or Hessian mercenaries?

The polite term would be "treaty" or "convention" troops. But it still belongs on a modern or post-modern board.

Well, the reference was to an endless circular debate on this board, mais comme tu veux.

Why are they fleeing France ? Or did I miss that ? Of course, in the US you'd be just called a racist for not supporting the "boat people" from France !

Andy ONeill15 Nov 2022 10:01 a.m. PST

They're not so much fleeing France as crossing to england.
I don't really follow why they consider england to be so much better than France.

The plan was to deport those who were caught to Rwanda. That's been legally challenged and I'm not sure if anyone has actually been deported yet. But the idea was clearly to put some off. Instead, we put them up in hotels.

It seems some aspects of keeping Johnny foreigner out the country was not entirely thought through pre brexit.
Along with some other inconvenient negatives.

In the UK, you are called a Racist, for not supporting the economic migrants.

not new that France is the doormat of the Brits who do not take responsability but never miss any opportunity to denigrate her and give lessons, as well as the doormat of Africa and the rest of world, hope that next French president will put an end to this situation beginning by the hard fact and common sense that the english border should be in England, it is up to the British to manage their own border and to build walls or anything they want in the Kent, not to pay the security forces of an other country for this and largely forgetting that this country will also pay, the area of Calais is the nightmare for the inhabitants, and of course as these illegal immigrants can't reach Britain, where do they stay, as usual, somewhere in a country having Paris as capital where 70.4% of violent thefts and 75.6% of simple thefts are committed by foreigners and until 93% concerning those in public transport…

Bad policy decisions have consequences, as the Swedes, Germans, and many others have learned too.

soledad15 Nov 2022 1:11 p.m. PST

Yes, very bad consequences in Sweden. People who came there have no intention to integrate in the country, they just want to suck the welfare system dry. Live of the people who work hard and pay taxes. When "free" money is not enough they turn to crime.

Some in the US would say the same …

France should not let 'Migrants' get as far as Calais… never mind attempt to cross Channel. Should be France's problem… but French 'shrug'.

Lilian15 Nov 2022 7:43 p.m. PST

The usual british cynism who forget that they invade France because they want to join Britain, change the british laws to discourage a great number would be the common sense, but no, the british "shrug", they don't care, you don't need papers to live and work in Britain and the French security forces converted in coast guards of the british, Calais the new english border as before 1558 with jungles and gangs, what is happening around Calais would happen in the Kent and we would have others reactions, others threads and others titles in TMP and the british authorities would have to get moving and manage the people who wish to reach the british heaven, the French have already enough work with all the others especially with the murders and terrorismsts acts taken place these last weeks and months

FWIW, two Russians boated to Alaska and asked for sanctuary. I think they qualify. As opposed to the vast majority that are crossing the Southern US border.

for not supporting the economic migrants.
IIRC … US law does not qualify illegal aliens who are breaking US Law crossing the border because they can't get a job back home.

Thresher0120 Nov 2022 9:30 a.m. PST

Technically, "asylum seekers" are supposed to seek that in the first country they come to after leaving their own, but sadly our lawmakers are ignoring that rule, so now, more than 5 MILLION have crossed our "closed and secure" southern border illegally in less than the last two years.

5+ MILLION crossing illegally proves that those in power are gaslighting the American public with their endless lies and over the top propaganda and purposeful disinformation.

Baghdad Bob would be pleased with how they are elevating the craft.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP20 Nov 2022 5:31 p.m. PST

Yes, but recently those in charge seem to only follow the laws that is part of their agenda, etc. IIRC, today I heard about 1800 illegal aliens cross the Southern Border daily.

FWIW – a high level member of the US Gov't who has been in DC for decades stated in a speech very recently. That the USA needs all these immigrants to do all the jobs that are available.

And the US birth rate is low, so we need them to have babies too.

He also said that the 11 million immigrants that are here now. That the US must get these people on the path to US citizenship. Does that 11 million include the drug runners, human traffickers/sex slavers, gang members, and don't forget about the terrorists.

Yep … you can't make this Bleeped text up. Saw it a number of times on the news.
