I've determined I need a new genre to sink my teeth into. I've decided on the "traditional" wild west. By that I mean I'm not interested in vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens, cyber-bikes, mythological, etc. but a sprinkle of spaghetti is okay along with tall tale gunslingers and regional native tribes.

Looking through my library I have Blackwater Gulch, Cowboys & Gunslingers (based on the Reaper Warlord system), Legends of the Old West (Warhammer Historical) but I've never played any of them.

I'll most likely be playing solo so local community isn't a factor.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Wild West rule set or pro's & con's on the rules I listed above?

Thanks in advance!

Fist Full of Lead. Tons of game play and review videos on YouTube.

I've run a couple of long-lasting campaigns & some convention games with TSR's "Boothill" 1st & 2nd ed.s which were a lot of fun. My campaign players really got into their characters as lawmen & desperados.

Another vote for Fistful of Lead…excellent skirmish rules and easily adaptable to different periods.

Fistful of Lead card activation so it's pretty good for solo play.

Dead Man's Hand by Great Escape Games gets good reviews.

Another vote for Fistful of Lead. It was originally written for Western games.

Six-Gun Sound and Six-Gun Sound, Devil's Elbow ( both by TwoHourWargames and available at Rebel Minis) are designed specifically for solo and cooperative play.

Fistful of Lead hands down. I've also used Shoot & Skedaddle for solo/2-4 player games, but it's less flexible than Fistful of Lead.

Fistful of Lead as well. Dead Man's Hand is a lot of fun -- it's a lot like FoL with additional bells and whistles -- but it's a much better multiplayer game. If you want something with a little more depth than FoL, then Gunfighter's Ball is a solid choice.

Boot Hill was great from an RPG perspective, but gunfights could easily get bogged down into math exercises.

I like Desperado. I don't have enough experience with other rule sets to comment.

Desperado is a great convention game. Easy to pick up. Never used it for more than a one-off gun fight.

I agree with you, 79thPA, & I started using "Six Gun Sound" for convention games as I'm a fan of THW as well.

Six-gun Sound if you're planning to solo.

I haven't played all the above but can recommend Dead man's hand. It plays well solitaire.

And they have a nice campaign book [ but it does lack a good scenario generator. I still have to develop one.]

Good luck. It sounds like there are a couple good sets out there.

I recall many great games using Steve Curtis's "Western Gunfight" miniature rules. With some beautiful pen and ink artwork free in the bargain!
