I am in the processing of mounting up my collection of 700-ish 15mm zombie and post-apoc figures and I was wondering what good books are out there.

I don't recall reading any zombie books.

As far as post-apoc goes, I have read "One Second After" and "One Year After", and I enjoyed them both. I have also read "Founders" and "Liberators" by Rowles. They are okay, but a little preachy and sometimes hokey.

Is "Dawn of the Dead" by Romero worth the read?

What books do you recommend?

I enjoyed Stephen King's "Cell". Solid reasons to how-and-why, and interesting look at what-comes-next. Not my favorite of his books, didn't lure me back into being the fanboy I was decades ago, but still a decent read.

I thought World War Z was a good read.

I also recommend World War Z. Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide is also worth a read.

I enjoyed the Dead series by TW Brown. You can find them on Amazon in paperback or for Kindle.

John Ringo has a whole series dealing with Zombies/Post-Apoc and several folks have added to that universe.

Thomas A Watson has several series related to zombies and/or post-apoc. Some are better than others.

John L Campbell has a nice series on zombies.

DJ Molles has a good series on zombies

Jonathon Mayberry has several books that include zombies.

A. American has a long series of post-apoc books (they have a pretty strong conservative/right wing slant if that matters to you).

JL Bourne has some good zombie books.

I enjoyed the Hell Divers series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith.
Also CyberStorm by Matthew Mather.

There was an old paperback series called The Survivalist. Should be cheap and worth mining for scenarios.

The William Johnstone, Ashes series in pretty good for a militaristic apocalypse type. It does get very repetitive after a while though.

Bob Hume08 Nov 2022 11:15 a.m. PST

Also, Johnstone has very conservative slant.

Another vote for Helldivers. The audiobooks are great too.

Craig Dilouie has some good books.
I liked These Dead Lands books by Stephen Knight and Scott Wolf.
Also, the Retreat series by Stephen Knight, Craig Dilouie and Joe McKinney is very good.

"The Earth Abides" by Stewart (?) is an early and quite moving book about a devastating plague and the survivors efforts to maintain civilization.

Another vote for World War Z. Great book – nothing like the movie.

Lucifer's Hammer by Niven & Pournelle--though the cannibal hordes aren't technically zombies.

Fred Mills08 Nov 2022 4:03 p.m. PST

Colson Whitehead's "Zone One." Urban warfare, chainguns on the walls, citizen soldiers in block by block, room by room clearances. Beautifully written too.

If you like audiobooks, get that version of World War Z. It's fully dramatized with a full cast of narrators, including folks like Alan Alda, Rob Reiner, Mark Hammil, etc.

The Risen series is real good.

The Arisen series by Michael Stephen Fuschs and Glynn James are well worth a read. Book 1 is Fortress Britain and they are set a year or so after the fall. Then there are a couple of pre-quals for the main series, and now a subseries about the MARSOC marines that feature in the main series.
Normally you can get the first one cheap on Kindle.

Frank Tayell's Surviving The Evacuation series is also good

Also check out the "We're Alive" podcast. Great listening while your working on zombies!
