is this in error? in revolution and empire, in the section on commanders operating independently – the range they have to be outside of for this is 200inches – that is 16 feet! who plays with 16foot tables?
am i misunderstanding things?

I wish I could help as I was involved in a couple of the play test games of these rules years ago, but I do remember they used the rules on a refight of Auerstadt and the table was 24ft wide, but I doubt that's correct though. Hopefully some one can answer this on the Empire board.
