Okay i finally got something in the Empire family – Revolution and Empire (everything else is either too hard to find or too expensive)
3mm is the scale i am really settling on now and the rules seem to be fine with any scale so long as one jsut make the adjustments – this scale fits my space allowance i think, but just still i am confused over the best way to base troops -

i am thinking the 1inch = 100yards or 80yards ground scale is good for me –

i believe the Rand E basing is the same as Empire

but can it work to go to a 3mm scale and also have more troops represented on bases ? as i dont know if i want to go with have like jsut 2 figures on a base or something at 3mm to represent a company

Can the 3mm strips be broken down like that? Even if they could, I wouldn't do it. That's just way too fiddly.

What is your space allowance?

GeorgBuchner04 Nov 2022 2:19 p.m. PST

probably about 3x5feet
3mm could be broken down but that is just kind of also negating the look of 3mm and that other micro scales where you can better represent masses of figures. I had been makign units with about a width of 1-2cm more or less for infantry

maybe thats where i need to start with working out things – if say the frontage of an inf company is 1cm what would be the appropriate ground scale?

i wish that this system could be a little more flexible with its basing like alot of other systems seem to be , or i am just still not well enough versed in it to know what is and isnt possible

I have read that the rules have a steep learning curve. If you want to stick with them and use 3mm, I'd consider using 4 to 6 3mm castings to represent a single 15mm figure.

well i have the rules now so i want to try them eventually – if i am representing on 15mm figure with 4 to 6 3mm castings, – which i could do, what shoudl the ground scale be, i cant go with the 15mm level ground scale.

what is the maneuver element for RandE in any case – i presume its battalion – i havent gone over all the rules yet. if i could be moving units as battalions that can work – as i had been making units as "blocks" 3 ranks deep – it would be great if i could use these with RandE

"Maneuver elements" are divisions of infantry, elite infantry brigades, and cavalry brigades. The smallest individual units (shown in the tables) are individual infantry battalions, cavalry regiments, and artillery batteries.

Thanks, I wonder if anyone here has done it in ay least even 6mm – perhaps doing it at a 6ll scale but with 3mm minis would allow for more per base

The ground scale would be the same, at least to my way of thinking. If 1/4 of an inch is 20 or 25 yards, it doesn't matter whether that space contains 1 15mm figure, or 9 3mm figures in three ranks. It still represents 20 or 25 yards.

Well I am just trying to get the frontage right -how closely adhered to must this be

GeorgBuchner06 Nov 2022 11:28 p.m. PST

perhaps i could just throw pedantry to the wind and just go with what i have – that is 1cm width (roughtly) infantry company and cavalry squadron units and use this with the 1inch = 100 yards convention

I am not that familiar with EMPIRE, other than knowing it uses "figures" to calculate firepower, casualties, etc. I am familiar with O3's 3mm figures, and the infantry strips are (a) 20mm wide and (b) of rather tough metal that is difficult to snip. So if you're using those figures you'll probably want to base your infantry on 20mm or 40mm wide bases.

Any way you slice it, you'll probably be using either a roster or else a chit to mark casualties, since you'll not be removing individual figures for obvious reasons. If you went with 1":40 yards, a 15mm 12-figure battalion (typical for French full-strength) is shown as 4.5" wide; this is close enough to 12cm so you could depict a battalion on three 40mm wide bases (if double-ranked, this would be 12 strips of O3 figures or 120, i.e. the battalion represented at 1:6 ratio, pretty cool!). Or if you went with a smaller ground scale of 1":80 yards, the battalion could be shown on three 20mm bases each with two strips (total of 60 figures, or 1:12 figure ratio). As the cavalry and artillery are molded on strips with pre-cast "cutting" groves, you have a lot more flexibility to mount them howsoever your needs require.

yes i expect to use rosters for my project. I hope it is not too blasphemous to say here, but my project is actually 3mm paper figures/units – i have been working on concepts and designs all year and had been settling on infantry being in 3 rank blocks so to speak – i bit like how they are done for the 2mm scale you see from irregular miniatures. I had bother 12 figure wide and and 6 figure wide versions. similar for cavalry though they i have in single rank and double rank versions – they are more a 2.5d design (more like perhaps 2.75d with how i am making them) – generally everything is around 1cm wide or 2cm wide for the pieces with 10-12 figures depicted

i am collecting some actual 6mm and 2mm armies also but i feel more drawn to the paper route and creating also all the scenery – such as bridges and towns and buildings in paper for 3mm scale too. The miniature purists may look at me with disdain but i am just following what my heart wants to do here
i like the kind of complexity with orders and friction of war that Empire and Legacy of Glory sand ESR tyle rules look to offer
