Well I thought I would never start Fantasy Wargaing but I am going to have to start.

I'm starting some BMP2's and want a decent game. On that basis I am going to have to stray into Fantasy by having them only slightly inferior to western troops in terms of command and control.

If I rate them as they actually are, all games will end without Russian artillery getting to shoot and the company will have to wait 3 moves for any decison to be made and Morale will be so low it will take ages to form up for an attack. To be honest you are pushing our rules to have a start leadership that is that ineffective, its like a unit about to colapse just still with ammo and as yet not overly fatigued.

Its a bitter pill to swallow but fantasy may have to prevail.

Tippecanoe- were they better then?

Everybody thought they were at least competent

It's not fantasy, it's hypothetical.

Games have to be interesting. If you want a good game about a lopsided situation you *suppose* that it wasn't so lopsided.

Not "fantasy", "contingency".

You could move the whole thing to another venue.

Arab Israeli would involve Warsaw Pact kit, but be even more lopsided. Mayhaps move it to Africa. Local government troops vs, insurgents or Wild Geese.

Check out Peter Pig's AK47 rules and figs.

Tippecanoe Last one +1

The growing trend to assume that the Soviet Army in 1985 was somehow as incompetent as the Russian Army in 2022 is one that can't go away quickly enough for my taste.

They aren't the same.

Stop trying to make them so.

Thresher0131 Oct 2022 7:16 p.m. PST

I imagine the Soviet army of the Cold War was a lot more effective than the current Russian army, given their large numbers, regular training/drilling, etc., etc..

So you'll be getting some orc's then

Legionarius31 Oct 2022 8:00 p.m. PST

Present-day Russians would lose every time in my wargames. They deserve it!

Prince Rupert of the Rhine01 Nov 2022 3:53 a.m. PST

Isn't coldwar gone hot just fantasy anyway? As NATO and the WARPAC never came to blows no one knows how a war in 1985 would have turned out. Unlike say Napoleonic were you have actual battles and campaigns to compare the various armies performance levels. In a cold war gone hot situation you are left using exploration based on performances in proxy wars, available vehicle data and anecdotal evidence from vets of the cold war. You can take a guess how things would have paned out but you have no way of really knowing. I mean technically you have more battle data for Tolkien's war of the Ring then you yo do for a mythical cold war battle in Europe….

Prince Rupert of the Rhine – Thanfully NATO wargames your "fantasy" games and even spends money on wars that have not occoured. So when the SH** hits the fan we can protect Europe.

Replaying Napoloinics is no different. You know what the outcome is so why forght it. To me your logic applies similarly. I am told Wellington never really knew wahat was was going on overall on the battlefield only where he was, no RT or TV then.
