Once upon a time I owned a small A5 hardback book full of naval rules for different periods; definitely from Napoleonic to WW2, possibly wider ranged. The rules varied greatly, at least one used playing cards for gunnery hits. Sadly I got rid of this book and would now like another copy but I can't remember the title to try and track it down on Amazon or E-bay. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Possibly this:

"Sea Battle Games" by P. Dunn (MAP 1970)

now available as a reprint here:

Or Donald Featherstone's Naval War Games, also available as a reprint.

I think you want:
'Naval Wargaming – from Ancient Galleys to Modern U-boats'
by Paul Hague
Full of great rule mechanisms including the playing card system for locating hits on ships, which is what I think you remember.

Whoa, look what I just found…

That's going to cost me some money.

Hague is great, especially his first one (Sea Battles in Miniature) but I am pretty sure the small hardback is Dunn's Sea Battle Games as Major B suggests.

Does Dunn use playing cards as mentioned by MJW?

4DJones30 Oct 2022 2:57 a.m. PST

Dunn uses playing cards: Hague doesn't.

@ Major B

Target! Many thanks Now the question [purely rhetorical] is do I want the revised reprint or the cheaper second hand copy from Amazon.

Get the Hague!

Get *both* Hagues!

Gents, Thanks for the advice but I'm not sure I want to bother with the Hague book[s]. My interest is purely 1880 ironclads and [effectively fantasy] single ship actions. I know Dunn covers this so unless you can suggest a specific reason the alternative is superior I'll stick with the one book.

Tastes differ, and it may not be what you are looking for, but Hague 1 is probably my favourite wargames book of all time. And it does have a couple of chapters on the ironclad era, 1865-85 …

Mainly because it has a player card system for gunnery hits which I thought you were looking for…
