Are they on grass or on concrete? No matter what you do, you are going to end up being wrong sooner or later. You have the same issue with pirates. Are they on deck or on the ground? How do you base your zombies? |

Most of the 'fresh' zombies will be on concrete. As they spread out, over time the get more worn and may tend towards the country. You probably need at least a couple of sets. ;) |

If the bases are creating a dilemma for you there's an easy solution: clear bases. Likto has a good selection of clear bases. |

I did my zombies on earth tone flock with some grass (same as my other modern figures). I don't do the whole city thing. My set up is a a few larger building along a two lane road, a small strip mall and the Springer Trailer Park. |

Clear bases. You can use a 1" punch and use large card holder sheets. Pulp Alley has videos on how to do it. Thanks John |

Go 1/2 and 1/2, concrete with lots of grass popping up. In the woods, it will look like bare patches of dirt; in the city it will look like unkempt concrete. |

I use sand, with the where-the-sand-is-thin areas flocked (Zombicide zombies get a grey base, not going crazy doing the bases on those… ;-) |

another vote for clear bases |

I just had this discussion with someone painting some zombies. I used to do a pretty generic crushed gray rock as it seems to fit most places. Then I started doing a lot of WW1 zombies and moved to muddy ground. In the end it's whatever you want. Some people game in quite varied settings others in one specific place. |

I like the crushed gravel with weeds look for contemporary zombies.
More here: link For fantasy zombies I stick to the usual dirt/grass.

I don't think I've seen plastic done well. To me, it just looks like they are on plastic because of the glare/reflection from lighting and the inevitable glue smudges/excess that is going to be visible. |
