A group that celebrates the republican pilots who fought fascism in the skies over Spain has condemned the vandalism of a memorial stone to a German airman that was looked after by an unlikely visitor – the Spanish ace who killed him…

Hopefully they'll catch the idiots behind the vandalism, and since they like to destroy things, put them on a chain gang breaking rocks…

It's an interesting story. My first reaction, before reading, was surprise that it was a story at all. 'Fascist monument vandalised' seems a non-story. The actual story behind the memorial is fascinating; I wonder if the vandals were aware.

In 2022 Spain, if they catch the idiots behind the vandalism, they'll probably put up a monument to them.

In 2022 Spain, Alicante at least, they remember the indiscriminate bombing of civilians, leading to hundreds of casualties.

At least they did not glue themselves to the stone, which is the sort of nonsense that is tolerated in the UK now.

I would rather have let the people decide whether the memorial is appropriate (after all it is not a tombstone). But for some arrogant little vandal to judge that is contemptible.
