I've finally finished my 28mm Papal St Patricks Battalion (nothing to do with the one in Mexico for the US reader) done with Gring 40 figs.

It was a very short lived unit, just being around for about a year in 1860, made up of Irish Volunteers fighting for the Papal States in the Risorgimento.

It's a really unusual uniform and a joy to paint, sadly it never fought as a unit, most men never got the uniform and the flags are unknown, so there is a large splash of rule of cool with this unit but with the Commander being long lost Uncle Myles O'Reilly ;-) I couldn't resist.

More pics on the blog post with more info in the unit, figs and painting.

Will need to paint up and add to mix – Thanks for doing the research

Now that is impressive – both from the history and the great work on painting up a complicated uniform – thanks for sharing!

Another great unit Ken. The attention to detail is wonderful and much appreciated I have really enjoyed viewing your progress of this project on your blog.
Keep up your outstanding painting of these unique figures.
Many thanks!

The Risorgimento is one of my years long hobby flirtations…have several units painted up in 10mm but sadly never finished the project.

Your 28mm St Patrick's Battalion is amazing brushwork and very nice basing. I imagine the piping had to have been a headache but the result is very eye-popping and makes a nice contrast to the green. The papal flags are very nice as well.

Many thanks everyone,

Prince Albert's Revenge, Iain at Flags as War kindly put the flags together as a stop gap until I can find out, and recreate whatever flag they actually used.

I'm upto nearly 500 Risorgimento figures now and should have my Battle of Mentana Project done before the end of the years.
