I am happily "Old School," for my gaming, painting, terrain, etc. I like what you created for a table. It is fun, for me, to get back in touch with my youth in my gaming.
I will game with whatever terrain is set up. To be honest, the ultra-realistic, detailed miniature painting and terrain, detracts from my enjoyment. I like to build my own terrain; I like to paint my own models, I like to game with the work of my own two hands.
Anyone can buy factory painted mini's that could be used on a movie set for special effects (current Star Wars models…), and a very few people can paint miniatures to such a high standard, but that, to me, is not what I enjoy. The high level of painting puts me on edge, as at some point, I know that I will likely drop one of the mini's, damaging it; I will likely damage something else, during the game, and then I will be self-conscious about it, to the point of barely being able to participate, let alone enjoying the game. Been there, done that, have the mental scars to haunt me forever.
I like more basic, games. They are more 'ogranic' to me. I love to play with the mini's I cast in my Prince August molds, with metal I melted and cast, myself. I love to play with hills that I crafted with my Hot Wire Cutter, covered with carpet I cut out, myself, according to the techniques I invented myself. None of it will win any awards, but it warms my heart, like nothing else. Keep your store-bought painted mini's and terrain. I will keep my stuff, which I painted, and often crafted.
I enjoy the whole of the hobby, including all of its sub-hobbies (collecting, army building, painting, crafting terrain, scenario design, etc.), including building a fun table setup, like what you did in this game. For me, it is all a part of the whole of the bobby -- more than just a game scenario, and winning. Cheers!
