Yeah, if you're used to Germany, even south Texas is something of a shock. Arizona isn't quite real.

Now in Fort Wayne, IN, I'm told the problem was local girls sneaking INTO the POW camp, the local boys having been deployed elsewhere. Mind you in 1944, a lot of our local population still spoke German. But I'm not sure language skills are properly appreciated among adolescents.

And we'll draw a discrete veil over a small number of German PW's who escaped into--I believe it was the Kentucky hill country--and were shot and killed by an elderly local woman who thought they were Yankees.

The United States poses hazards not properly appreciated by my cousins in the old country.
