There's "Bugles, Boots, and Saddles" from Sergeants3. It is one of Larry Brom's non-TSATF rule sets. Very enjoyable to play.

Definitely Pony Wars if you want a fun (ideal for, and better as, multi-player) game based on Hollywood westerns rather than history.

This a full description of WESTERN by Peter Pig.
Most rule sets have no full description which makes your quest much harder ,but there are plenty of rule sets out there from which you can choose.

There are a set of videos on the PP website as well to help with information.

Good luck.
If in the US you can buy from Brookhurst hobbies.
If in the UK just pop in and have a chat with us.

Yellow Ribbon:

The only game I know where the tribes act like they did historically.

Yeah, Yellow Ribbon. I have a fan version that a gent updated and clarified the rules on YR. Some of the original was a little blurry in places. There is also the 'The men Who would be Kings' Pony wars variant (posted on the Facebook group) which seems interesting. The Tomahawk and the Flame for TSATF has a lot of good info about the period and looks pretty good. It is a freebie on line and not a commercial product.

Thanks

I agree with Extra Crispy & John. Yellow Ribbon. Pony Wars is an entertaining game with, IMO, somewhat outdated combat rules. Its strength is the event, reinforcement & ambush card deck, as well as the automated Indian reaction system. Fortunately, for me anyway, a more polished combat system can be substituted. Great fun.
John, its possible I'm the guy to whom you refer WRT the updated & clarified YR rules.
Brynden, both YR & Pony Wars have been around since the 1980's, so may not meet your litmus test.

"Yellow Ribbon"--the ONLY rules set that understands that Plains Indians are NOT the Grenadier Guards, obeying orders and fighting to the last man.

If you only want fun, then "Pony Wars" for sure, but if you want any part of other than Hollywood History in your game,
it's YR.

Just because a title was published last year doesn't mean it's more authentic or encourages the use of your brains!

I am going to weigh in for Yellow Ribbon as well.
It is unmatched in allowing the natives to be driven by a set of motivations that are different than that of the colonizers.

A fantastic concept, that I have only seen attempted in very fee rules.

Now, I suspect it qualifies as rules I played back in 1988, but you can download it for free*

From this service called Scribd:

*They provide a free trail period.
There are many older rule sets on there.

Yellow Ribbon is still available on the RAFM website.

Pony Wars.

I want Hollywood in this period. Not History, per se.

When BrianW pointed out that RAFM was a "live" source for the rules, I went to place an order.

But wait, I see they have "Remember the Maine and the Hell with Spain", So was going to order that as well.
But first check the self for old rules:
3 copies of Yellow Ribbon
2 of Remember the Maine and the Hell with Spain
A 1980 copy of Pony Wars
And Continually Wear the Blue: Info…
War Paint from 1995, with two level of games in one cover.

I don't know if this means anything, but I now recall the fun of having played it at conventions and picking up the rules, at least three times.
So go to RAFM put down your $8.99 USD and give it a tray.
I hope they come out with a large print version!

Brynden you can get _Bugles, Boots and Saddles_ from
the Sergeants 3 website quickly and fairly cheap.

Good set and I play with Sash and Saber 40's.
