The Royal Australian Mounted Constabulary was originally conceived as a kangaroo-riding police force. Problems with pugilistic mounts set them on horseback for several years. In 1863, an American inventor pitched his fantastic rocket-assisted jumping stick to the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, having failed to impress the federal army back home.
