Interesting article – goes into the early history – but more importantly the reformed Navy after the Articles of Confederation with the Barbary Coast pirate threat and credits Knox with the doing perhaps more than anyone for the future of the Navy by looking past the immediate threat and building a modern fleet to complete with European powers.

While ship captains certainly were the heart of the Navy and its future – without Knox – might have turned out very differently
