Well sometimes you may take as many or more losses if you try to fallback/break contact. And you probably have a second or two to decide. Of course, there always is the Shock value of an aggressive attack shooting, yelling etc. If given the choice this would not be how I would want to attack. But sometimes the situation is rarely to your liking. |

In the flat, open terrain with fairly hard ground (baked by the summer heat), the Humvees may have been the best choice. Drive as fast as you can with some big weaves. Hard to drop defensive artillery fire on you, especially with the slow response of Russian artillery. |

If this is in a Russian rear area after a breakthrough, there may not be any Russians in the village – they find out by taking the village! Druzhina Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers

Hard to drop defensive artillery fire on you, especially with the slow response of Russian artillery. Yeah, that field's going to get a pasting next week…. Given that Russia has some pretty serious manpower issues and keeps trucking units from one side of the occupied area to the other you wonder just how well manned the front is? And that's before you get into the discussions about the reliability of the troops they have. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of front line units retreated rather than wait for support I suspect they think won't turn up. |

"how well manned the front is?" One calculation was ~1 platoon per kilometer? I may be misremembering, but it was very low. I thought it was probably pessimistic (for the Russians), but if they don't have everyone pushed into the first line and there's a reasonable number of rear-echelon troops … Meanwhile, the attack north of Izyum has moved at breakneck speed. Either the fighting has reached Kupyansk, most of Kupyansk is in Ukrainian hands, or Kupyansk has fallen to the Ukrainian offensive. Take your pick. History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme? link |

Could be my imagination but the gunner sounds like a native English speaker ?North American? He wears an interesting Latin script sleeve title too- seems to read 'Nukin' Futs'. |

Yes, the Russians have proven to be less than effective in most tactical, operational, etc. missions. Shock and awe They survived, the next time they may not be that lucky. However, they took the better/best tactical choice. And "won" … An old Ranger saying I heard at Benning, a few times – "Speed is security" … |

In a way I am reminded of the classic ISIS attack with whats his name. The useless arab abou Hajaar. But this is infinitely more effective and well done. |

In a way I am reminded of the classic ISIS attack… Yes, it's a classic ISIS assault tactic. |
Legion 4 | 10 Sep 2022 7:54 a.m. PST |
Yes, this is definitely more effective when used by the Ukraine than ISIS. ISIS were clearly better than the Iraqis they were facing. The Kurds were equal to them, IMO with the signature ISIS war crimes. The way ISIS executed this tactic. They were jihadis/fanatics. They believed if they died fighting the infidels they go to paradise. Who are the infidels ? Everyone who is not ISIS. Pretty sure most of the Ukrainian Forces don't think that way. |
