I took my 17-year-old daughter to the doctor yesterday, and she saw a Conan novel that I had in the car. She picks it up and looks at it. Conan looks like, well, Conan -- all muscle, with a broadsword and a breechclout. The female on the cover is wearing a G-string bikini bottom and some metalic pasties. She has a short sword in her right hand. My daughter says, "She's going to fight like that? She's wearing less than a bathing suit. She's gonna get hurt."

Yeah, I think it was those Frank Frazetta covers that attracted a generation to Sci-Fi more than anything else.

They're called Men's Adventure Magazins for a reason.
REAL men read "REAL" men's adventure magazines.

Great collection of cover art from the 1950's to the 1970's from Taschen publishing house:

Be sure to take the unabridged first edition.
Fantastic stuff.
The covers, not the stories, for the most part.

Absolutely, book covers are still of utmost importance for SF/Fantasy to promote sales.

Great book with naughty cover that leaves no room for doubt, why you should buy it.

The silliness is the draw. That's a feature, not a bug.

At least the magazines never bought them in job lots. Anyone else remember old Berkley Medallion SF covers?

I lost it in a move somewhere, but I used to keep a Gothic with a classic cover--brunette in nightgown running from a castle tower with one light burning in a window. I kept it because the novel, while a Gothic, took place on a sheep ranch in Australia, and the heroine was a blonde mostly wearing jeans.

You know, no one ever worries about Conan going into battle with nothing but a sword and a breechclout. And few people note that in the Howard stories he's generally properly armored. He even critiques those who aren't at least once. "Beyond the Black River" I think.

+8 to Robert Piepenbrink.

And let's not even discuss *any* citizen of Barsoom's cobat kit, shall we?

"You know, no one ever worries about Conan going into battle with nothing but a sword and a breechclout."

Was just going to mention that. 79thPA's daughter skips that and goes straight to the girl's outfit?

My daughter says, "She's going to fight like that? She's wearing less than a bathing suit. She's gonna get hurt."

Sigh obviously she's that much of a bad ass that she doesn't mind getting hurt!
Only Sissy's where armour cos they are afraid of getting hurt!
Duh!🃏

E. R. Burroughs 2 greatest heroes kicked mucho butt wearing even less: Tarzan in a breech cloth & John Carter in even less as written in the novels.

"Great book with naughty cover"

Well, see how much damage she did to the car that hit her, and she didn't have anything on? Wearing the bare minimum, she wouldn't have gotten a scratch… ;-)
