What were the most popular modern/Cold War tabletop minis rulesets played in the 1990's in your experience?

We stopped playing "moderns" in the 90s. In the 80s we played GDW Tacforce or WRG Armor and Infantry 1950 – 1985.

WRG 1950-1985, hands down (and not the awful 1950-2000 set which bunged up a lovely set of rules and made them as unplayable as Challenger :) )

GDW Combined Arms (Command Decision)
Modern Spearhead
Fist Full of TOWS
Engage and Destroy

just to name a few

Combined Arms
I think WRG was more popular in England.

Spearhead was the first thing that popped into my mind. As noted above, it may depend on which side of the pond you are on.

Used Threat rules, but they were from before the Gulf War.

Interesting stuff, please keep the titles coming if you think of more!

I don't think Modern Spearhead came out until the 2000s, as did Cold War Commander. Prior to that, WRG, although I mainly played GDWs "Assault"

Andrew LA31 Aug 2022 3:12 a.m. PST

I played Combined Arms (modern version of Command Decision) and then Modern Spearhead when it came out in early 2000s

GDW's Combined Arms. Everything from tanks, off board artillery, forward air controllers, and electronic warfare.

I think WRG was more popular in England.

Interesting, thanks for this observation.

Fistful of Tows for tank battles. Infantry is so-so.

In the 80s I played Leopard Tracks and Combined Arms. Then maybe Chieftain, though I didn't like that.

UK. WRG up to early 80s. Pretty much stopped after that. Would definitely use again for period.

Timelines "Close and Destroy"….Loved them…

Combined Arms released detailed TOE's and OB's for Desert Storm – both sides, so they were around before '91. We switched from Combined Arms to Modern Spearhead when these came out. Still playing it.

I own/owned many different sets of Modern minis rules but only played GDW's Combined Arms and the Threat Rules that Major Mike mentioned above on a regular basis – got them at Ft Riley with from the author Gary Mills

GDWs Combined Arms.
