I am reading Duffy's book on The Army of Frederick the Great. Unlike other authors, he says the Freikorp were very effective in the small wars against the Austrians.

Are there any good sources on these SYW small wars that I can use to supplement Duffy?

My renewed interest in skirmish games makes me want to put on some games in this area.

Not that I know of, Dan, but there's a nine small action scenarios in Grant's Refighting History, Volume 8. While not designed for skirmish games, the historical background for each scenario may give you some ideas.

Not specifically on small wars but if you need unit information Digby Smith is hard to beat (as well of course as Project Seven Years War on-line)

Those other authors were probably taking the cues from Duffy. His first edition said the freikorps were worthless.

But second the recommendation of the Grant volume. "Small war" isn't always "skirmish." Or at least, wargamers tend to use the word "skirmish" in multiple ways.

a book which is a must read on this topic

Wernitz, Frank : Die Preussischen Freitruppen im Siebenjährigen Krieg 1756 – 1763 – Entsehung – Einsatz – Wirkung, Podzun – Pallas Verlag 1994

Don't rely on English sources only and yes there is huge sources out there to supplement Duffy, like the Generalstaff history of the 7YW.
