I just love some responses to Q16 "How often to you clean your rifle?" 2% said never…..

Interesting to see the initial enthusiasm for the M16, as better suited to jungle warfare than the M14. That soon changed on first introduction.

Very interesting document. Nice find

I trained and carried both. I like the M14 (fiberglass stock) for accuracy but the mags were too large and bulky. When you did a lot of firing the fore stock got so hot you could not hold it.

We had the M16A1 with the chromed chamber so not the jamming problem of the original. The pop up sights were nice. The difference was about 24" at 500 yards.

Very interesting, especially about the rust and wooden stock
problems for the M-14.

Interesting about the magazines. When we first had the SA80 A1 a lot of the problems were eliminated by those of us lucky enough to ‘acquire' Colt magazines to replace the flimsy issue ones which caused stoppages.

I trained on both the M-1 Garand and M-14 in ROTC. Never did like the gas cylinder piston on the M-14. You have to drop it just right.

I used the M-16 on active duty. I always thought how useless it would be if the gas tube ever clogged.
