Hello everyone. I am trying to get some figures together for the uprising against austro-hungary in 1869 using 15mm and the men who would be kings rules. I am going to use the Lancashire games Austrians but what to use for the Montenegrins / Bosnians? I was thinking some Venexia Ottoman musketeers and Balkan cavalry for the Bosnians. It seems a bit of a leap of faith with the timeframe, but having seen some of the military equipment of the clans at the time its not totally out the window. For the Montenegrins I was thinking something like irregular Greeks (I guess Evzone type figs). Does anybody know if there is anything suitable in 15mm like that? It is not my normal field so apologies if this is glaringly obvious! |

I'd also take a look at OG15s (which are imported into the UK by Time Cast). Their FPW Austrians are better than Lancashire in my opinion and cheaper as well. You need to look at OG15s late Renaissance Ottoman light artillery for rebel artillery (if they had any), as they are pretty generic. I would take a gander at QRF's Maximillian Adventure Contra Guerrillas in fez and jacket and mounted on horse for rebel cavalry (again, if they had any). If they weren't in the fez, it would depend on the rebels but there are various lance armed cavalry in the various Ottoman ranges that might work. Regarding infantry – I'd check out Miniature Figurines Nap. Ottoman Greek infantry. For the Montenegrins, Irregular makes Montenegrins, which are available in their Balkan Wars range that might be better than the Evzones. I would also look at Miniature Figurines Marlburian Hungarian Rebellion infantry – depending on what was worn, as I've thought they look pretty 'Balkan'. Finally, again, depending on the headgear, you can find some ACW zouaves in fez that might work, as well as well as some that are in a beret with tassel. I'm using ACW zouaves in fez and kepi for my 1848 Serbs. QRF makes some in their ACW range. Also, there are some great miniatures made by wargamingminiatures.com that might make some great rebels – again, depending on what was worn. If the rebels' leaders wore the fez, you could get some Lancashire Turkish generals from their Russo-Turkish War range. I'm using them for my 1848 Serbian leaders (vs. the Hungarians). |

Thanks for this Swampking. Really useful. That is the Austrians covered for sure. The montenegrins will be from Irregular. They really capture the look. See link here (if it works). link I am rubbish at painting horses so this is ideal as there were not many. It will be a skirmish set up with the men who would be king rules. I am also setting up for the Serbian Montenegrin theatre for the 1st Balkan War and that is easier all round. |

Painting horses ain't that difficult really. My guess is that you live in the States judging by your handle. If you have a HobbyLobby, Michaels or other such store, look at acrylic craft paints – various shades of browns, reds and tans. They're water soluble and flow quite well straight out of the bottle. Put the horses on craft sticks (popsicle sticks) and after priming, pick a few colors and paint the coats first, then tails and manes (all black), hooves a light gray and then, hit the reins with black and whatever horse furniture the manufacturer has on the horse. That's how I paint horses in 15mm – it's 15mm and the best thing is that you don't need to be perfect to get them on the table – it just has to look convincing. If you look at my post on the Battle of Viksborg, it'll lead you to a Google photos site where a lot of my cavalry are posted. Again, the '3 foot rule' applies – just make them look convincing. I also hit all my minis with a gloss finish which makes the colors really 'pop' at 15mm. TMP link It'll be great to see what you come up with – it's a cool period and looks to be great fun as a skirmish game. |

Ahhhh, I live on the other side of the atlantic, I am afraid. Then get through Europe, by car or a nice cruise… Stop off in Tivat. I live there. Within 10KM I have got 4 Austro-Hungarian forts, a former JRM repair yard with 2 submarines still there, Kotor and Perast. And from my desk at work its an hour drive to Shkoder and Rozaja fort in Albania. I might be rubbish at horses, but there is no excuses for not getting the terrain right! If you need anything photographing, just give me a shout. |

Great links. Really like the basing and you are right, those horses do the job. Going to need to some at some point! |

I live in Poland, actually. However, I'm sure that Montenegro has some form of acrylic craft paint (actually, any water soluble paint will do, including paint for children). If you need any other advice, drop me a line at: jestarnes66@gmail.com Cheers mate! Eric |
