While most Australians like Vegimite, it does take a couple of generations. My parents are English, but I was born in Sydney. I don't like Vegimite (I can eat it, but not _like_ it), but both my children love Vegimite. Go figure. JohnG |

Isn't Vegemite the comical nemesis of Vegeman? |

Actually, that's right: it does make a nice soup stock. That's how I ended up using up the little jar of Marmite that vexed me so. And it's been my experience that if an American encounters an Englishman that seems like a Texan, he is in fact dealing with an Australian. Most Americans can't distinguish the accents, but attitude counts for a lot

When I ws in the US I had people ask if I was English, and when I was in the UK I had people ask if I was American. I just get asked if I am human :-( |

Vegemite or Marmite, both are good tucker in my book. There are some Yanks with good taste (in food), a friend of ours went back to Virginia a couple of weeks ago and was overjoyed with the six-pack of Marmite I had given him. He liked it straight off on his first visit and hoes into it whenever he stays at our place. BTW, on the spotting Aussie tourists, the girls hanging out of the bars along M.H. Del Pilar in Manila or Field Avenue in AC could spot us and id us as Australians from about 100 yards. May have been the shorts, thongs (feet-type thongs) & singlets, or they may have been super-smart. Cheers, Pro

Chickinchainmail, I keep being asked if I'm English in my own country. BTW, there is a milder form of both vegemite and marmite on the market now from Masterfoods Australia. Called Promite, it's entirely vegetable in origin though don't ask me how; Much less harsh than vegemite and not as cloying as marmite. Great with lettuce on sandwiches. |
