The depleted uranium slug is so dense, it turns tank armor into white-hot shrapnel in the crew compartment.

Yes, we saw that in both Gulf Wars. It is very good at what it was designed for. Killing AFVs … What's not to like ?

What's not to like ?

Er, Radiation?

It is extremely powerful against Ruzzian armour though!!!

PS: even the humble panzerfaust turned the armour it penetrated into white hot shrapnel!

In 1979 I was at one of the ranges in Germany with my unit (field Artillery) when I heard a strange sound. It sounded a little like a helicopter but it started and stopped to abruptly and didn't sound right. I later learned that it was an A-10 Warthog that had done a gun run. Very scary for it's time.

Yes, I think we know all about the "Radiation", etc. caused by DU rounds. My comment of "what is not to like" was hyperbole. Regardless, there is probably something better than DU rounds in the works ?

Worked with A-10s in training a few times. However, no live fires.

Another time, AC-130s were doing a live fire, they were hosing down targets on a range way out of our LOS. I kind of like the sound of "mini-guns". As in combat I'd think they'd be very effective. Again, as we saw in Iraq & A'stan.

DU not withstanding …

You don't need DU to do what's described

Not combat footage, but I saw this video the other day you might enjoy, "What It's Like to FIRE the AC-130 Gunship":

Good point …

May have to check it out. We did have a walk thru of an AC-130 when at USAF Air-Ground Ops School. Very interesting. That was one of the USAF systems we were being trained to work with.

We saw AC-130 gun camera footage over Vietnam firing at a convoy of North Vietnamese T-54s and other vehicles moving down the Ho Chi Minh trail at night. When the 105 fired … then entire airframe shook with each shoot. And every shoot hit a target. Looked like a number of T-54s KO'd.

I thought the amorphous tungsten rounds didn't work out and they went back to DU.
Is there some other alternative?

I thought the amorphous tungsten rounds didn't work out and they went back to DU.

According to the article above:

1. Depleted uraniun 'self-sharpens' for continued penetration; tungsten curls.

2. Tungsten is less dense, and may have less effect on modern MBTs.

Yes, as I said, they may have something else in the "works" …
