Russia's long-range bombers fire cruise missiles against Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure nearly unimpeded, so Ukraine needs surface-to-air missile systems that can track and destroy cruise missiles, a senior Ukrainian defense official told Air Force Magazine.

Russian TU-160 and TU-135 strategic bombers take off in Russian airspace, off-limits territory for attack with the U.S.-supplied weapons that Ukraine now operates. Once airborne, they launch deadly cruise missiles capable of hitting targets across Ukraine. Then the bombers safely land, having never been in danger…

One can only imagine the unbridled outrage from Moscow if early one morning the fuel bunkers at those bombers' airbases were to go up in a fireball.

Ukraine war crimes we say!

I understand Western reluctance to be seen--however paranoically--allowing their weapons to be directed to generally recognized Ruzzian soil.

However, knocking down those Bombers over the Caspian Sea before dropping their loads would give me the biggest smile since my honeymoon.

"A Ukrainian Defense Ministry official told Air Force Magazine they are hoping the NASAMS will arrive by mid-September."

They were only recently ordered from the manufacturer so September seems optimistic.

Couldn't they use lasers? I understand that the Israelis took a comment from one of our members of Congress about Jewish lasers seriously, and have fielded an upgrade to the Iron Dome.

And if the new system can shoot down missiles, it should cause some unfixable damage to bombers.

Maybe Ukraine can order one or two sets.

Actually, no, Ukraine needs aircraft and weapons that can destroy those Russian bombers on their airfields.

If you want to destroy wasps you don't swat at them in the air, you destroy their nest(s).

They should also consider taking out Russia's leadership, including even Putin himself, since Putin is certainly brazenly saying and trying to do that to Zelensky.

Possibly, if Israel has a working system, but, Israel has been reluctant to help Ukraine.

Russian heavy bombers don't fly close to Ukraine, but their cruise missiles do.
