Do read this.

A von Ripper (the v should be lower case) serving on the Allied side with a story that reads more like Indiana Jones, warts and all. If even half of the story is true, then what credit goes to him.

My daughter was stationed at Ft Bliss for 4 years, and we always visited her at least once a year (1550 miles away) and never knew about this mural. it might be in an unused area of the base right know though.

IIRC, he (or someone like him) also gets a mention in Bill Mauldin's "Up Front."
