"Forty-five years ago today, a movie debuted in theaters that would literally change the world. That movie, of course, was called Star Wars and it would impact not just popular culture, but politics, science, and so much more over the next few months, years, and decades.

From the action and adventure to romance and pathos, there are probably infinite things to love about Star Wars, but maybe its most undeniable trait is how personal it becomes to everyone. Even people who don't like Star Wars can tell you about Star Wars, and fans can tell you every little detail—favorite characters, favorite movie, where they were when they first saw it, the first toy they got, how it connected them to friends, family, everything. Star Wars isn't just a movie. It's a way of life, which began on May 25, 1977…"

Making out with my eventual wife. After seeing it and going "wow"two or three times that May, the other 14-15 times we saw it that summer were an excuse to be in a dark place.

"Use the instrument panel, Luke…. that's what its there for. Advanced instrumentation designed to hit small targets."

Oh wait…. that was Thumb Wars.

I still remember the opening roll of text setting the scene and the music…still gives me a chill. Oh, and realizing the title was Episode IV.

I haven't seen this yet, but it may turn out to be my best Star Wars memory:

Star Wars, 2

The first was the menagerie of droids in the Jawa sandcrawler. So many bizarre and fascinating mechs, and I wanted to know all their stories.

The second was, "lock x foils in attack position."

At both moments I caught myself stepping out of the moment thinking, "damn, this is really good."

Empire,

The whole damned thing.

After that,

Not too much.

Seeing movie star Debra Paget, in the flesh, outside a theater where a friend and I had just seen "SW" instead of going to a teacher in-service session. Time better spent.

Not sure I actually have a favourite Star Wars moment – not a huge fan, to be honest

The goosebumps I got from listening to the AM radio ad before I saw the movie. I was so pumped by the time saw I was about to explode. I thought the double sun shot with Luke was compelling.

The only way to experience the first SW movie is in a movie theater. That's always stuck with me…

Going to the movies hopeful that it might be good and surprised at how good it actually was.

Second memory, coming home from work and my wife tells me the apartment now has cable and Star Wars is playing on HBO.

Watching it on the very big screen for the first time, as a teenager – the original SW movie, Episode 4, A New Hope.

Back then, movie screens were large, and NOT like those super-sized "home theater" screens they have in theaters now.

The feeling of impending doom as the Tantive IV is swallowed up by the big cruiser, then the stormtroopers burst into the corridor, gunning down the rebels in the big helmets.

I don't remember Star Wars coming out. But I do remember the pins and needles anticipation waiting for Empire to come out.

Thresher0104 Aug 2022 12:03 a.m. PST

I first heard about it on the radio and it sounded like something completely different and entertaining.

I wasn't wrong.

Great stuff back then.

It is truly amazing how movies and movie tech have developed in the last 50 years or so, especially in the Sci-Fi realm.

Being awed by the opening scene with the star destroyer chasing the smaller ship.

The rescue of Princess Leia. "No reward could be worth this."
