All,
I'd like to make up a landing party of Royal Navy personnel to support my Vendean rebels. This is for skirmish level, so looking at maybe a 12-15 figure group. Is there any rule of thumb regarding the ratio of Marines to Seamen in the party?

Putting together Warlord french infantry. Metal Banner has a seperate brass rod with a spear tip pressing.

The chap is wearing a holder for the ople.

Q: do I clip off the spear head, or is it meant to go behind the banner "head"? It certainly won't fit in the holder.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

The bug again… Naval landing party: on skirmish level I would choose for either only Marines or only seamen. If you need to blow bridges or something like that, you could use a Marine unit with one or two specialized sailors. Marines are in the first place used for fighting, sailors have as number one job sailing.

Porthos,
Thanks much.

If your fleet brought any artillery ashore it would be manned by sailors. Probably pulled by them too until they could snag a few horses.

The number of marines on a Royal Navy warship was generally intended to be one per gun. I think the USN followed the same principle. A 74-gun ship of the line would have 74 marines. Conveniently carronades aren't counted in either case so a 74-gun ship that also had 8 carronades would still be considered a 74 with 74 marines.

The crew of a ship of the line was about 7 to 8 men per gun. So HMS Victory's complement was something like 850 men, comprising 750 sailors plus 100 marines. HMS Agamemnon, a 64 IIRC, would have been about 500. For frigates and smaller I have a feeling the crew per gun might have been less because the guns were lighter.

Gives you some idea of what proportions are feasible. I would hazard a guess that experienced sailors would have been seen as a lot less expendable than marines.

Hello The H Man.
I do not know about this bug that merges threads… I hope I am doing the right thing in replying here to your question?

With the flag bearer and its flag pole I would recommend you the following:

-before the primer, use a pin vice smallest drill head to create a channel through the hand holding the flag pole, so that you can fit it there nicely

- se if you can deepen the hole in the holder on the model leg, this would also help giving the flag pole a more stable position

- to fit the flag pole higher end in the eagle or head, I would not chop the pointed part. This may reduce the length of the pole between the hand and the top, possibly creating complications when you have to set the flag

- the pointed head should still fit snugly in the channel on the back of the eagle/head and the super glue should have enough surface to work

- you can have a dry fit test first and before any painting done, to check if the spear point fits inside the head/eagle channel, but I would suggest to glue it only at the end, once the model is painted and the flag is already on

I hope this helps, have a great weekend!
