I had that set.

Yep. I had some of these as a kid. I put them up in the attic for some years and when I took them down many of them simply crumbled to the touch. I think the plastic didn't handle the extreme temperatures in the attic.
Other people have mentioned that these figures sometimes just broke down and 'em, still love 'em.

Had quite a few. Converted them to Franco-Prussian war. Agreed on the breakdown. Before I sold them off my ACW collection required super glue more than dice to game with.

I converted mine to Franco Prussian as well! I also converted the WWI French based on an article in Airfix Magazine. I thought plastic was non-biodegradable?

I had tons of Airfix figures including these but with the later, fully painted box art.

I did a sample conversion to British colonial and used the Germans for Franco-Prussian War figures. I still have them around somewhere, but there are many broken arms, legs, and necks.

Yep! Bought these when the first showed up here in OKC, as well as the matching French. Used the Airfix Foreign Legion as 1914 French.

I started with Airfix in '63, I believe with their first crude WW II Germans and Brits, and over time bought at least four boxes of everything as it came out. Had many hundreds of horribly painted figures--in enamels!--over the decade before finally discovering actual wargame rules in 1970.

If you want me nostalgic, speak of Airfix….

All the Airfix First World War sets were brilliant. Some of the poses were a bit odd but that adds to the charm! I seem to remember a couple of blokes running along with a hula-hoop…

Good memories!….

Loved the French WW1 figures. My mom would ask why I bought the same ones over and over.

I had that set, but with a different cover. The only Airfix set I got with the original cover was the French.

It's chancy whether they go brittle or not. I think it's due to the batch of plastic not being right. I have some (bought at different times) that went brittle, and others that were fine, even after 50+ years… ;-)

Yep – had 'em and like many above used them for Franco-Prussian War (minus the machine guns)

Thanks!

They were nice figures that got converted to all sorts of things.
Mine became the Coldstream Guards 1815, with Belgic shakos built up from paper and plasticene. I shudder at the memory.

I still have a handfull of these in a box some 5m from where I sit now – together with all the other Airfix artifacts. Memories :-)

Had quite a few sets from all periods. Wondered why they went to bright yellow plastic.

Col Durnford23 Jul 2022 6:52 a.m. PST

I think the bright yellow was used in the later castings of several different sets.
